Robotic Pool Cleaner Runtime and Charging Times Explained
How to read runtime and charge-time specs, and why they matter more for cordless models.
Runtime and charge time are cordless-specific specs — a corded model runs as long as its cycle timer is set for, since it draws continuous power. For a battery-powered model, though, these two numbers determine how much of your pool it can realistically cover in one go, and how soon it's ready for another cycle.
Reading a runtime spec
Manufacturers often list runtime for a specific mode — an "Eco" or low-power mode typically runs longest, while a "Turbo" or full-coverage mode drains the battery faster. When a listing shows a range or multiple numbers, that's usually why. We record the figure as the manufacturer states it, including which mode it applies to when that's specified.
Matching runtime to your pool
A cordless model needs enough runtime to complete a full cleaning cycle on your specific pool size — a battery good for a 30 ft pool may not finish a 50 ft one before it needs to recharge and restart. This is one of the main reasons corded designs remain common for large pools.
Charge time
This is how long the robot needs on its charging dock or cable before it's ready to run again — typically 2 to 4 hours across the models we've catalogued. If you plan to run it daily, charge time affects how much flexibility you have in scheduling back-to-back cleans.
