Robotic vs. Suction & Pressure Pool Cleaners: What's the Difference?
How the three pool-cleaning categories actually differ in setup, power draw, and coverage.
Automatic pool cleaners fall into three broad categories, and they work in genuinely different ways rather than just being different price points on the same idea.
Suction-side cleaners
These connect to your pool's skimmer or a dedicated suction line through a hose, and your pool's own pump provides all the power to move the cleaner and pull in debris. They're typically the least expensive category, but they add wear to your main pump and filter, and generally handle only the floor.
Pressure-side cleaners
These connect to your pool's return line (sometimes with a dedicated booster pump) and use water pressure to move around and sweep debris into an attached bag. They tend to handle larger debris like leaves well, but need either an existing pressure line or an added booster pump, and typically don't scrub walls or the waterline.
Robotic cleaners
Covered in detail in how robotic pool cleaners work — the short version is that they're fully self-contained, with their own motor and filtration, running independently of your pool's main pump. That independence is why they can scrub walls and the waterline in a way the other two categories generally can't, at the cost of being the more expensive category up front.
Which one makes sense
If your priority is walls and waterline coverage, or you want to reduce wear on your main pump and filter, robotic is the category built for that. If you already have a booster pump and mainly deal with leaves, a pressure-side cleaner may be enough. Suction-side remains the simplest, lowest-cost entry point for basic floor cleaning on an existing pump.
