Saltwater pools use a chlorine generator to convert dissolved salt into chlorine, which means the water — and anything submerged in it regularly — is exposed to salt concentrations that plain chlorinated pools don't have. That matters for a robot's hardware over time.
Why salt matters
Salt is more corrosive than fresh water to unprotected metal components, connectors, and seals. Manufacturers that explicitly rate a model for saltwater use typically design it with corrosion-resistant materials, sealed electronics, and salt-tolerant brushes and drive components. A model without explicit saltwater confirmation may not have been built or tested with that exposure in mind.
What to check before buying
- Whether the manufacturer explicitly states saltwater or salt-chlorination compatibility.
- Any stated salt concentration limit — some manufacturers cap compatibility at a specific ppm level rather than covering saltwater pools unconditionally.
Maintenance in a saltwater pool
